Also.... I'm currently looking for a new place to rent for my photography studio. I need a space at least 5m x 5m within a 15km radius of Perth. If anyone can help me out please email me at online[at]bexish[dot]com
I have just finished uploading 27 examples of my graphic design, so go have a look!
Expect more updates soon :)
I've spent the last few weeks slaving away at my new studio getting everything right and now it's time for me to start shooting again!

This offer is only available once per person and you need to book before January 31st 2007 and have your photos taken before March 1st 2007
Email me at online[at]bexish[dot]com to make a booking... Obviously Perth people only unless you're travelling here any time soon :D
Also a mob that have a studio in the same building as me are having a massive fundraising party. The party we had last month was awesome and this one should be even better! My work will be on display in the building along with other talented artists and photographers. There will be aerial performances and musicians there and other entertainment.
The party will be held Wednesday 20th December from 7.30pm at 24 Parry Street in Fremantle. The cost is a $20 donation and includes a free drink and prizes.
My birthday is on the 23rd of December so I'm going to kind of use this as a way to celebrate my 20th!!!! Hope to see some of you folks there!
The exhibition at the Opera House went really well. I sold one of my photos (THANK YOU!!) even though I didn't offer them for sale :)
The remaining photos are going to be on display at the Liverpool library gallery in NSW. I have no idea where that is but they will be there from Jan 15 to Feb 23 2007. (Edit: The exhibition at Liverpool Library Gallery has been cancelled due to issues with insurance.)
I am hoping to have my online store organised by early next year. I just have to work out some issues with shipping and choose how I wish to process credit cards. Any advice from other artists/online store owners would be appreciated!!!!!
Hooray for a new design. There's still heaps of content missing but every spare moment I have I will be adding more. Enjoy!
Four of my photographs will be on display at the Sydney Opera House from the 22nd to the 23rd of November in the Utzon room!!!!
"For the first time Accessible Arts, Noise and the Sydney Opera House have collaborated to present an inspiring and intriguing exhibition for two days only 22nd and 23rd November 2006 with superb harbour views at the Opera House. AART.BOXX is a collection of fantastic works from winners of a nationwide competition by artists under 25 with a disability. It is a chance to view an exhibition of unique voices of a generation of emerging Australian artists who are communicating in a way that is empowering and expressive for the artists that have never had a voice before.
See the works of recently exhibited artist at the renowned St Halle Pierre in Paris (www.hallesaintpierre.org), David Morgan, a high functioning autistic artist who has pushed the boundaries, to the gorgeous, poetically-photographed works of Bex Hirdman, to Tim Sharp’s quirky cartoons of a character called Laser Beak Man allows him reach out to people when Autism wont...." Read the whole article at the Accessible Arts Website.
Exhibition: Wednesday 22nd November 1pm-6pm & Thursday 23rd November 9am-4pm, in the Utzon room of the Sydney Opera House, Australia.
Unfortunately I won't be able to attend the event *sad*.
I'm thinking about donating some framed pieces of my art/photography to Telethon which will be auctioned at the dancing with the telethon stars ball in October. The guy whos framing my work said if I do that he will donate the frames too!
One of my clients Top5 Guide is sponsoring the event too which is fantastic. I hope to see some of you there.
Ohhh awesome. I just got a letter saying I was successful in getting a $2000 per year scholarship for uni. Rock on!
Holy Moly
I just rang up the Univesity of Southern Queensland and I have been accepted into the Bachelor of Information Technology course!!!!!
*does a little dance*
Hmmm so I rang up the University of Southern Queensland today re: my application. I SHOULD be finding out by the end of the week if I'm going to be going to uni this semester.
I'm not overly excited as I have to start back at the begining with random boring stuff. It's going to be close to a year before I get to start learning programming again *le sigh* It will be good to be back on track to fulfill my goals again since Computer Powers crash.
I suddenly remembered evil TAFE has part time units. So maybe next semester I might enrol in some like vb.net, java, advanced programming in C, C sharp, printmaking (hopefully for textiles...) and shiz like that. I need something to get my brain working again... but god do I hate TAFE, classrooms, teenagers and teachers etc. I hate the learning environment, but if I do end up doing some units at least I won't be there full time *gags*. Hopefully the teachers will know what they are talking about too..... unlike some of my past experiences with the place!
Applied for Uni today.
Lets hope that I get in..... even though I am 2 months late to apply, haven't got the qualifications to get in (ie I didn't do TEE and I haven't completed a certificate THANKS COMPUTER POWER!! grr), and the world seems to be against me at the moment.
Maybe the fact that what I HAVE studied I've got excellent grades in, and the fact that I'm a WOMAN wanting to study IT helps my case.
Cross everything for me :/
OMFG THE ROOF IS LEAKING AND A F#%KLOAD OF WATER WENT INTO MY (other) COMPUTER and MONITOR!!!! *cries* It made terrible zapping noises. Now they are lying upside down on my floor to drain. This year is not going very well! :(
Well I've been looking into doing some courses at uni via correspondence.
so far these courses look good
http://www.usq.edu.au/handbook/curr
http://www.usq.edu.au/handbook/curr
Wooo what a great start to 2006.
My college might be no more it seems due to financial reasons.... so I have no idea if I'm going to be able to finish my course or not. CRAP!
On the way back to Perth today from Kalgoorlie some idiots smashed into our car deliberately and forced us off the road. I got photos of them and their number plates so HARHAR. The cops in Merredin were pricks to us, they weren't even going to go after them because they had picked them up earlier for something else and got their details. We were so god damn scared we would come across them again on the way to Perth. Cos they forced us off the road TWICE within 30 minutes.
Luckily we weren't killed or injured seriously. I can barely move due to the whiplash, but as I said it could have been A LOT worse! Still can't believe it actually happened. Both the aggressive driver's behaviour and the police officers' were insanely weird.
Today I had fun making photography backdrop stands out of sewerage pipe, coat hangers and masking tape (because im sick of using bulldog clips on my blinds!)
Works really well too :)
So far I only have black and white canvas backdrops, but one day when I find the time I will be painting the extra length of white to make something a bit more interesting.
I'm also saving up to make some wooden backdrops with wallpaper on them. Should be lots of fun shopping around to find some pretty decor.
If I want to become an Adobe Certified Expert, it looks like I'm going
to have to take a holiday. There isn't a single place in Perth that
offers the exams. The only place in Western Australia that does it is
Kimberly TAFE in Broome. If I have to travel to get this I may as well
go to Melbourne or some place that's decent to visit :)
Hooray for Perth being so isolated -_-
I had my new desk delivered today, I finally have something to put my computer on again! (I left my other desk at my old house.)
It's been about a month since I've been able to do any graphics, but now I am perfectly capable of completing my backlog of shiz once I find some time in between work and study haha.
If you want(ed) me to do some design/illustration for you now is the time to ask and/or remind me :)
cheers lovelies
If you want to check out the 1st issue of reAKT it is available for download (6mb). My work is on pages 3, 6 and 7.
A new youth arts and culture magazine for Perth, called reAKT, is about to hit the streets.
To celebrate the release there will be a FREE gig on October 17, 8-12pm, at the Velvet Lounge (the rear of the Flying Scottsman) which is just off Beaufort St.
The ADOBE CS 2 conference was soooooooooooooo bad!! I'm really glad it was free.
I miss Adobe’s previous speaker, Alan, he was a champ. The new guy is just an incredibly boring (ex)designer who seemed to talk about himself more than the product.
I was hoping Alan would be there because last time he saw my work and wanted to take my CD so he could get me into the beta testing program, but I needed the CD to get some work printed that day. He gave me his business card with his address on it so I could post it but I never got around to it and then I lost his card :(
I feel asleep during the conference, so then Mike and I drew pictures to keep ourselves awake till the break. I can't wait till they send out the email for feedback…. I gave it a negative 5 stars.
I would love to have the Adobe CS2 package though!!!!
All you graphics freaks like me should know that this is on:

Awesome - I finished making my first program in C (computer programming language) today. It works too! Very simple, but hey you've got to start somewhere.
Wowsa I just passed my driving test today! First try lucky. I’m about a year late getting my license due to being way too busy (and broke) during the last year or so. I’m so glad that’s all over and done with now.
I'm going to the SAE open day tomorrow just to check out their courses in multimedia and 3D animation. I'm not really sure what I'm going to do when I finish my current course. I'm really urging to learn some more things before I go into business... well full time business. I could get a diploma in Software development with only a couple more months work after this advanced diploma I'm doing, cos many of the modules are the same and that would be quite handy.
But do I Travel, Work or Study after I complete this course?
I'd really like to experience the world before I get tied down to anything for another length of time, but I'd also like a bit of financial security before going overseas. I should be able to find work overseas, and having a British passport makes things less complicated.
I don't know!!
I guess I'll see what I'm like when the time comes. Sometimes I feel like I only have a really small space of time to experience everything I want to in life so I'm in a rush to get every where NOW. I really need to learn how to chill!
Tuesday I started my new computer-training job with the wedding photographer, Lyn Whitfield King. She is the most GORGEOUS person I have ever worked with; I can't believe how sweet she is. I showed her how to scan a 35mm negative, how to do basic touch up things in Photoshop, and then how to print. We're going to be working together about 2 days a week and I think It’s going to be a really pleasant working experience.
Wednesday I went to deluxe to pick up my A1 prints, and they looked SOOOO beautiful. You have no idea how pleased I was, especially after all the other stuff ups at the other printing places. Plus their prices have dropped significantly which makes me even happier. Mum and I are taking them to get framed tomorrow.
I spent quite a bit of money today on a Canon i9950 A3 printer and a Philips 21inch CRT monitor. I was considering getting a Wacom intuos3 9x12inch tablet but I need an extra $500; so ill probably aim to get that in the next 6months or so. The Aiptek tablet I have at the moment is great... but I broke the pen over a year ago and it can be pretty annoying to draw with especially if I'm going hard at it. Unfortunately the replacement stylus' are really damn hard to get. The online store only sells to the USA, and the Australian distributors are absolutely hopeless. Now that Wacoms have halved in price in the past year I'm really etching to get one.
I helped out with the art workshop at passages resource centre in Northbridge today for the Hepatitis Council of WA. Not many kids (can't really call them kids though cos they’re older than me) rocked up, but that’s kinda understandable. It was nice to sit amongst them and chat about things.
The focus of the art workshop was to develop some material to promote awareness of how serious diseases like hepatitis, HIV and AIDS are transmitted, paying particular attention to the spread of infection through body piercing, tattoos, and sharing injecting equipment.
There were quite a few amazing individuals there. I really admire their courage.
I just got a promising email about working with Lyn Whitfield King (one of the leading portrait and wedding photographers over here) as her private Photoshop trainer. I was recommended to her by the guys at PRA studios. Woo.
Hmmmm it is going to be quite a busy month for me, not that it ever isn’t! I think it’s a good type of busy though.
Tomorrow I'm talking to a lady at the BBV (Blood Born Virus) council as they are going to be running art workshops in the future for teens (mainly homeless and disadvantaged) and they need a young artist to help guide them, inspire them etc. Its only 2 hours at first… just depends how many kids show up. I thought it would be a nice thing to do.
Then Wednesday I'm talking to Jill at propel arts about some possible funding in the future for one of my BIG ideas, which shall hopefully benefit quite a large number of young creatives in Australia.
AND this is all on top of College. At least now I’m getting to the stuff I enjoy or want to learn.
Its been quite a nice week for me.
Busy - but nice and rewarding.
I spent the first half making a logo for a drilling company, which I will show later once they settle on the final design and colours.
Thursday I went to Pollinate. A youth arts forum. The topic of discussion was how to turn your art project ideas into reality. So basically we went through all the planning and things we have to think about, we also got feedback on our ideas from numerous funding bodies that were there. It was a really nice event to participate in, especially talking to other young artists around Perth... there’s quite a few projects I’m interested in getting involved with. The organizations web site is here (opens in new window) for any Perth people that are interested :)
Wooo I get my art back from the art gallery tomorrow. It’s been out of my hands for over a year now. Travelled to Tokyo, and numerous places across Western Australia. I wish it could speak; I'd love to hear about all the places it's been and the people who saw it.
I would just like to announce to the world that I now have my Canon 20D! Cheers to the guys at PRA.
Bahaha ISPs are amusing, especially Optus. I think they had the most ridiculous ADSL plans out of everything I have seen (excluding Telstra). Not only are their plans more expensive, setup up fee incredible ($329 if you don’t switch your home phone to them too) but their shaping on your download speed after you exceed your limit goes down to 20-28kbps. Can there be anything worse?
The sales guy was trying so hard to sell it to me.
”You get 100 free local calls!” – “We get over $50 discount on home/mobile a month. What’s $0.25 times 100?.. it’s not quite $50 is it?”
”You get 5 free email and some webspace!” – “I host my own websites and I currently have way over a gb free, and I have unlimited email at my own domain.”
By the way – Australia’s IT industry sucks. Why can't we be on the high speeds like the rest of the world? Being limited to 1.5mbps download compared to what they have overseas is insane. Upload speeds are even worse, which means hosting from home or any where in AUS is pretty ridiculous, you pay less for a server overseas. Think of the economy!!! We are so behind with e-commerce and most other areas of the IT industry. *Slaps Telstra, the banks and the government*
I successfully finished building my computer today (my first!). No grunts or flames when I turned her on for the first time (haha), booted up with no problem. I was expecting something a little more complicated, but hey I’m not complaining. Now all I need is a better monitor (I bought a cheap 21inch for $150 to last me until I have more money), and my camera, which is APPARENTLY arriving on Monday or Tuesday *crosses fingers*
I put a $1000 deposit down on a Canon 20D digital SLR camera today at PRA studios in the city. They are in seriously high demand and I don’t want to wait another month to get one! I already missed out on the first shipment.
So far I’ve only bought half the gear I need to build my computer with the grant money I received last month. Here’s what I have:
- Intel 865PE+Lan DDR400/333/266 motherboard
- Pentium 4 Prescott 3.2ghz cpu
- Dual Layer Dvd-rw
- Floppy Drive (yay)
- 120gb + 80gb hd
Soon I should get my 1024mb of ram, Radeon X800pro graphics card, a case, and the usual peripherals. Can’t wait to put this beast together!
I started my course at Computer Power a couple of days ago. I’m already close to 30 hours ahead of schedule, which is nice. I like being able to go as fast as I want. Totally beats spending weeeeeeks on basic things I already know. I think they had the impression I didn't know anything about computers.... The instructor even turned the computer on for me. "You push this button to turn the computer on", I was like "ohhh... really?”. Haha you get that I guess.
The picture of me in the paper looks hilarious. Look here (opens in a new window).
I start my Advanced Diploma on Monday, I can’t wait!!
I WON THE $5000 art grant!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I felt like I was going to fall over when I got up on the stage to receive the award and give a speech (which I hadn't prepared for!). I just blurted out a lot of “oh wow”s and “thankyou”s. Then I had cameras following me around for about an hour and had to shake a lot of random government official’s hands. Then Channel 31 interviewed me; they’re apparently going to send me the footage, which is pretty cool.
I still feel kinda shaky. They spelt my name wrong on a non-negotiable cheque, which is pretty funny.
BIG BIG BIG thanks to the West Australian Art Gallery and The International Foundation for Arts and Culture. Much love to you all. I will spend my money wisely!
I’ve decided to study the Advanced Diploma Of Business Systems offered at Computer Power (formerly known as Spherion) so when the time comes to set up my own business I am fully capable of managing every aspect of it, not just the creative side. It may seem peculiar that a person passionate about creative outlets is choosing to study IT, but it will all make sense in time :)
Computer Power’s self-paced learning suits me, as I find myself getting bored and unmotivated if I’m not challenged. So when I’m in the easier parts of my course I can finish them as fast as I want and move on, unlike conventional schooling. I’m really very excited. You can check out the course outline here (opens in a new window).
In other news: I find out about the $5000 art grant I’m short listed for in 2 weeks. I’m so nervous with anticipation. *squirms* Cross your fingers for me!
Melville Times Newspaper recently published an article about me.You can view a copy of the article here (Opens in new window).
I'm a bit disappointed with the accuracy of the quotes, mainly "art is about who you know". I was referring to the film industry and how people would go about gaining employment with the -top- production companies, I never actually said "art" in that sentence.
I believe art should be about expression and communication... an outlet and a release that should be totally personal. Art shouldn't be about trends, popularity and connections - yes those things can affect your success, but art is certainly NOT about whom you know. Otherwise I thought the article was very well written, and I adore the photo. Big thanks to everyone involved with the publication.
My art is going to TOKYO!!!
I went to the opening ceremony of the Year 12 Perspectives exhibition today and was pleasantly surprised to find out my art piece "Depredation" will be making the journey to Tokyo, Japan later on this year.
Look at the online exhibition here (Opens in a new window).
There are so many impressive pieces from West Australian art and design students, definitely worth the look! If you can make it to the WA Art Gallery in person, the expo will be running until the 15th August 2004.
Wow, I'm so excited. The March edition of Design Graphics was delivered to me today. Reality finally hit as I stared at my very own photograph on the front cover!! Check out the full article here (Opens in a new window).
Well what an awesome fortnight it has been.
10 days at sea in 40 knot winds. I was one of the only people onboard the Leeuwin who didn't get seasick, lucky me ;) Had fun times with boys dressed in mini skirts, 30 second showers and very little sleep. Not to mention the back injury I have come home with, and burns from the hot water bottle.
The voyage was hard work, but it was heaps of fun. Getting use to being surrounded by people 24 hours a day was probably the hardest part, but it all turned out really well and I met a lot of really great people.
My biggest accomplishment was probably climbing to the highest point of the ship. You can see a a crappy (disposable camera) photo of the view here (Opens in a new window).
OoOOoOoOOoo what a wonderful birthday present!!!
My art is on page 20 of the January edition of Design Graphics magazine. ROCK ON!! Click here to have a look (Opens in a new window).
Thankyou so much to my dad, for buying me a years subscription to my favourite magazine, and the team at design graphics for publishing my work... I'm stoked!
I have pretty much achieved everything I set out to do this year. Woo that makes me feel happy.
I just found out today that my art has been accepted into the Year 12 Perspectives Exhibition at the WA Art Gallery!!!!
I got an A in geography (an extra subject I picked up) which means I get my certificate of excellence for 10 A grades in year 11 and 12!
I'm so relieved school's finally over. I miss it in a way, but it will be nice to have a more vibrant social life again, and finally have time to spend on my art.
You know you're an artist when you'd rather spend $8k on digital camera equipment instead of a car. Or perhaps that's insane!?
Hip Hooray for high school graduation on Thursday night!
Big congrats to all those also graduating this year. We rock!! *does a little dance*
It feels so strange moving on from the security of highschool. Moving on from the place which has practically been my home away from home the past few years. It's exciting and scary. Man it just doesn't feel like it's really happening.
I went to the opening night of the Young Originals art exhibition at the Northbridge art gallery of TAFE tonight. You can see a picture of myself with my art piece here (Opens in a new window.) Thanks a lot to my friend Jessica for taking such a great photo!
I don't know whether to scream with excitement or anger.
I couldn't wait to find out whether I got into the Quest For Excellence and Young Originals so I rang up the education department today and I have been accepted for both!!! wooo yay I'm so ecstatic about that cos I thought I might miss out this year.
BUT I went to pick up my photos today. The ones I went into Perth to take at 9pm on my own! The ones I REALLY needed to turn out because I have soo many photo assignments due it's not funny. but NO. The photolab stuffed up my negatives. They cut negative frames in half and left scratch marks and fingerprints all over them too. They are completely unsalvageable. I still cant believe they cut photos in half... How blind/stupid do you have to be?
They only printed 18 out of the 36 photos too... Gargh! I paid for the premium service. and what do I get? I can't wait to own a digital SLR camera so I don't have to put up with other peoples mistakes anymore, just my own.
Time to take more photos I guess!
Thankyou so much to my dad for buying me bexish.com and providing me with some space and bandwidth. I can tell this will be the start of a new obsession.
